Match Report - c/o www.bathlacrosse.com
4th September 2004
Date: 19th Bath Eights
Location: Recreation Ground, Bath
Time: 10.00 all day

The 19th Bath Eights tournament was by far the biggest yet with more teams, more players, more referees and more vendors.

Mellor LC defeated Brooklands LC 3:1 to break a seven year monopoly of the trophy between Timperley and Wilmslow, both of which failed to reach the Semis.

This year the club arranged things for the better, making this years tournament the best organised ever. A 5 minute maximum waiting time between games meant that the day ran much more to time, and the day didn't drag on to late into the evening. The day was opened up to all the exibitors avaialable, and 4 took up the opportunity. Making a 'retail village' in the middle of the park. A fastest Shot competition opened to two age groups U15 and Adult, situated next to the exibitors in the middle of the park.Fastest Adult shot won by a player from Timperley, with 94 mph. Fastest U15 shot by a Sheffield Steeler Junior, with 69 mph. St John Ambulance re-invited to cover the sick and the wounded, they, dealt with 22 players, mainly for bruises and twisted ankles.

The quarter finals were as follows:
Mellor 6 Mersey 5
Rochdale Cowboys 3 Hampstead 2
Cheadle 1 Sheffield Steelers 2
Sheffield University 1 Brooklands 9

The Semi Finals:
Mellor 6 Rochdale Cowboys 2
Brooklands 4 Sheffield Steelers 2
The Final:
Mellor 3 Brooklands 1

All in all 621 goals were scored in 81 games which is nearly 8 goals a game or 1 goal per game every 2 minutes.

Highest total score in one game was 14. Between Stopfordians v Cheadle (3:11), and Mellor v Heaton Mersey (12:2).
Lowest game score was 3 which occured in 7 matches.
There were 17 'shut outs' and 8 teams scored 10 or more goals in a game.
All the burgers were eaten (thanks to a last minute effort by the referees) and we ran out of beer.
Of the 31 teams booked in, 29 arrived on time and were able to play.
There were 17 referees 'on tour' who refereed for 18.9 hours or 2.7 hours each.
Next year will be the 20th Bath Eights, and hopefully it will be even bigger and better.
